Layering Clothes: Tips and How to’s for Layering Clothes — in a Luxe Way of Course
The truth is layering clothes gets easier the more you experiment. I’ve also learned that the best layered looks happen on accident so it’s best if you can be openminded and creative when trying to layer clothes. It’s also important to not take yourself too seriously. There’s no point to fear failure in this. We’ve all done it. We’ve all walked out there one day with a really funky assortment, totally wrong — even all the celebs have done it one day or another. At least we won’t be on US Magazine front cover with a full analysis on how we wore it wrong!
Definitions
A “layer” of clothing is considered any article or clothing or accessory.
Things that qualify as a layer:
- Outerwear: Jackets, coats, vests
- Inner Apparel (tops): Long sleeve-shirts, short-sleeve-shirts, tube tops, sweaters, turtlenecks, tank tops.
- Inner Apparel (bottoms): Skirts, pants, jeans, leggings.
- Accesories: scarves, belts, hats, headbands, gloves, sunglasses, don’t forget eyeglasses count too! –I even count colored contact lenses.
- Jewelery: Necklaces, earrings, watches, bracelets, rings, chokers
Layering Tips
- Consider all your options
The reason what I wanted to call out all the various items that qualify as layers is because I think oftentimes people forget about all the creative things you can use to differentiate your look. At the end of the day I think layering is really just a simplication of what is trully advanced coordination of looks/outfits. - Don’t limit yourself to seasonal items
For example, don’t limit yourself to winter pieces just because it’s winter. BUT do not constrain yourself to your winter wardrobe. The best thing about layering is you can use pieces from your spring and summer wardrobe. - Don’t overdo it
Limit yourself to no more than 5-6 layers, and DO NOT exceed 10 layers (that includes jewelery and accessories)
